Wolf Lake at Rock Hill, NY -
History of Wolf Lake Wolf Lake, also shown on early maps as Wolff Pond, was supposedly named for its abundance of wolves in early times, as indicated by Mr. James E. Quinlan; however, that does not explain the sometime use of double “ff” in the spelling of Wolf.
WOLF LAKE"Wolf Lake" is a private residential community situated in the mountains of Sullivan County, only 90 minutes from New York City. The focal point of the community, the Wolf Lake clubhouse, provides a strong communal atmosphere with social and recreational activities (pancake breakfasts, annual picnic, swimming events, dinners, etc.) for seasonal and year-round members, both young and old. Swimming lessons are provided by certified personnel at the beach area. The theme of Wolf Lake is "Forever Wild".
The community, consisting of approximately 1,700 wooded acres, plus a 340 acre spring fed lake and two smaller connecting bodies of water, is home to about 235 families, most of which are seasonal residents. The Lake is available for swimming, sail boating, canoeing (no motor boats) and fishing. The surrounding acreage with its network of trails, offers hiking, mountain biking, cross country skiing, and hunting, in season. A basketball court, softball field and rifle/trap range are also available. The Conservation Committee maintains/manages the lakes and forest land.
Homes within the community are single family on lots ranging in size from one-third to one acre. Most of the homes are situated around the perimeter of the lake. Wolf Lake was first developed over sixty years ago and future development of new homes is now limited to only a few previously approved building lots, thereby preserving the modest size and quality of the community.
The southern region of the Catskill Mountains offers a variety of shopping, restaurants, outstanding golf courses, and resort entertainment, all well within a half hour drive. A harness racetrack is minutes away, as well as ski slopes and world famous trout streams.
